Choosing a focal length
Focal Length is probably the first point to consider when choosing which lens to use. Dependent on your circumstances, there are two main considerations, will you go for a fixed or zoom lens? The main reason that professional photographers opt for a fixed focal lens is generally fixed lenses offer a lower F stop (see below) and can therefore capture faster moving images using a faster shutter speed. This results in sharper images as more light enters the lens allowing a quicker exposure with fast action shots because a greater amount of light will enter the lens and onto the sensor.
The problem with a fixed focal length is the inability to be able to frame your picture or video to make the most of the subject you are trying to capture. Many of the higher end zoom lenses offer  good compromise and low F stops to allow for reframing of subjects with only a small sacrifice noticeable with a slower shutter speed.

14mm

70-200mm

100-400mm
